How GPA Is Calculated
GPA is a weighted average: each letter grade converts to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.), multiplied by the course's credit hours, then divided by total credits:
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits
For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course earns 12 grade points. A B (3.0) in a 4-credit course earns 12 grade points. Together: 24 points ÷ 7 credits = 3.43 GPA.
Standard 4.0 Grade Scale
- A+ / A = 4.0 · A- = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3 · B = 3.0 · B- = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3 · C = 2.0 · C- = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3 · D = 1.0 · F = 0.0
FAQ
What is a good GPA?
A 3.0 (B average) is generally considered good; 3.5+ is competitive for graduate programs; 3.7+ qualifies for honors at most universities.
How do I raise my GPA?
Higher-credit courses impact GPA more. Retaking a failed course (if your school replaces the grade) is the fastest way to improve it.
Does this work for high school?
Yes — the unweighted 4.0 scale is standard for US high schools. For weighted GPA (AP/IB classes), add 0.5-1.0 to honors grades manually.
