Calculate unit economics before revenue

A sale is not the same as profit. A useful per-unit model starts with the amount paid by the customer, then subtracts marketplace fees, payment processing, fulfillment, product cost, inbound shipping, packaging, advertising and an allowance for returns. Amazon and Etsy use different fee structures

Amazon FBA calculations may depend on category, product dimensions, shipping weight, storage period and fulfillment program. Etsy commonly separates listing, transaction and payment-processing fees, while optional advertising can change the economics of a sale. Account country, currency, tax treatment and program participation can also affect the final amount. Do not copy one platform’s percentage into the other platform’s model.

Use a repeatable seller workflow

1. Enter a realistic selling price and landed product cost.
2. Add every fee that applies to the account and fulfillment method.
3. Model advertising, discounts and returns rather than assuming they are zero.
4. Compare profit per unit, margin percentage and break-even price.
5. Verify the inputs against current Amazon Seller Central or Etsy Help documentation.

Fee schedules are snapshots, not permanent promises. Each marketplace can revise rates or introduce program-specific charges, and a calculator cannot see private account terms. Review the cited source and calculation date before making a material pricing or inventory decision.
