Time Clock Calculator
Need a fast answer to “how many hours did I work?” without building a full time card? This time clock calculator adds up any number of shifts — punch in, punch out, break minutes — and totals your workweek in both h:mm and decimal hours. Times accept plain AM/PM entries like “9:00 AM” or “5:30 PM” (24-hour format works too), and overnight shifts that cross midnight are handled automatically.
It goes beyond a simple sum: turn on the overtime switch and hours past 40 in the week are split out at the federal FLSA 1.5× rule, and adding your hourly rate produces a gross pay estimate with the overtime premium included. It is built for quick checks — verifying a paycheck, quoting a client, or tallying a side gig. If you need a printable Monday-through-Sunday card with one row per weekday for payroll records, use our Time Card Calculator instead; this page is the flexible multi-shift version where you add as many punch rows as you need, for any days you like.
All rows count as one workweek. Overnight shifts (end earlier than start) count as crossing midnight. Rows highlighted red have an unrecognized time and are skipped.
How to Use This Time Clock Calculator
- Enter each shift as start time, end time, and unpaid break minutes — “8:15 AM” and “4:45 PM” style entries both work, as does 24-hour time.
- Add or remove rows with the “+ Add another shift” button and the × on each row; one row per shift, multiple rows per day are fine.
- Leave the overtime switch on to split hours past 40 at the federal weekly rule, or off for a straight total.
- Add your hourly rate to see gross pay with the overtime premium applied.
- Read the table: every shift shows h:mm and decimal hours; red-bordered inputs were not understood and are excluded.
Rules and Assumptions
- Overtime: the federal FLSA standard — non-exempt hours over 40 in a workweek pay 1.5× (or 2× if you select double time). Some states (CA, AK, NV, CO) add daily overtime rules this page does not model.
- Breaks: entered break minutes are subtracted as unpaid; under federal rules, short rest breaks of 5–20 minutes must be paid, while bona fide meal periods (usually 30+ min) may be unpaid.
- Overnight shifts: when the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is counted as crossing midnight.
- Decimal hours: minutes ÷ 60 — so 7:45 = 7.75 hours, not 7.45. Payroll systems commonly round to 0.1 or 0.25 hour increments.
- Gross pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier; taxes and deductions are not included.
FAQ
How is this different from the Time Card Calculator?
The Time Card Calculator is a fixed Monday–Sunday grid for a formal weekly card. This time clock calculator is a free-form punch list — add any number of shifts, for any days, and get an instant total.
How do I enter times?
Type “9:00 AM”, “9 AM”, “5:30 PM”, or 24-hour “17:30” — all are understood. If an entry cannot be parsed, its box turns red and the row is skipped.
Is overtime really calculated weekly?
Federally, yes — only hours over 40 in a workweek trigger 1.5× pay; working a 12-hour day does not by itself create overtime. A few states add daily overtime; check your state labor office if that applies to you.
How do I convert 45 minutes to decimal hours?
Divide by 60: 45/60 = 0.75. So 8 hours 45 minutes is 8.75 hours. Common ones: 15 min = 0.25, 30 min = 0.5.
Does this calculator save my entries?
No — everything runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent anywhere. Screenshot or copy your totals before closing the tab.
